The trial for accused school shooter Nikolas Cruz — who allegedly gunned down 17 people in a Florida high school in 2018 — was delayed Thursday until at least next summer.

A Florida judge agreed to the delay after Cruz’s defense lawyers pleaded for more time for the trial that was scheduled to begin on Jan. 27.

“We would like to have this case resolved by the end of the year. That has always been our goal,” Cruz’s defense attorney, Melisa McNeill, said.

Prosecutors agreed to the postponement and the judge ordered it — but added she did not intend to delay the trial beyond next summer.

“This case is going to be tried this summer at some point,” Judge Elizabeth Scherer said.

Cruz is charged with 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for allegedly opening fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018.

His lawyers have said Cruz will plead guilty if he’s spared the death penalty and given a life sentence, a deal prosecutors have rejected.
