A Louisiana state trooper has died in a car crash that occurred just hours after he learned he would be fired for his role in the death of a black man during an arrest.

Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth was pronounced dead Tuesday at a hospital following the single-vehicle collision on Interstate 20 near Monroe, according to the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office

Hours before the crash, Hollingsworth had been informed that his agency planned to terminate him as a result of an investigation into the death of Ronald Greene in May 2019.

The case has drawn backlash after authorities initially said that Greene died when he crashed his vehicle into a tree following a high-speed pursuit.

But Greene’s family alleged troopers used excessive force while taking him into custody following the chase that had begun over an unspecified traffic violation.

They filed a federal wrongful-death lawsuit claiming the troopers “brutalized” Greene, repeatedly used a stun gun on him and “left him beaten, bloodied and in cardiac arrest” before concealing his cause of death.

His family also released photos showing significant bruises and cuts to his face, and other images that revealed that his car had only minimal damage.

Police have repeatedly resisted calls to release body-camera footage and other records related to Greene’s arrest, but they launched an internal investigation into the case last month.

Hollingsworth was placed on paid leave Sept. 9, though none of the five other officers involved have been.

Lee Merritt, the attorney representing the Greene family, noted that the trooper’s family “has the finality of knowing exactly how he died as their community mourns his loss.”

“The family of Ronald Greene, however, is still being denied the same finality by the State of Louisiana,” Merritt said.
