The 57-year-old Marine veteran who survived the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump last month has spoken out for the first time since his release from the hospital.
David Dutch was standing in the bleachers behind the stage where the 45th president was speaking at 6:11 p.m. when he was shot twice — once in the chest and once in the liver — at Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on July 13, 2024.
Dutch was one of three rallygoers shot, while volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore was the only attendee killed during the shooting.
David Dutch was one of two rally attenders who survived the attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump on July 13, 2024 Facebook“David, his wife, Sheree, and the rest of the Dutch family wish to express their sincerest gratitude for the enormous level of support that they have received from their friends, their fellow Americans, and everyone else, whether domestic or abroad, that have kept David and his family in their prayers,” the Dutch family said in a statement released through his attorneys, obtained by Fox News.
Dutch thanked the first responders and medical professionals, whom he credited for saving his life.
“The brave men and women that saved his life, including, but not limited to, the police officers, the medics, the life flight crew, and the medical professionals of Allegheny General Hospital, as well as those who continue to care for him as he navigates the road to recovery.”
The New Kensington resident arrived at the hospital in critical condition and was placed in a medically induced coma.
He underwent multiple surgeries and was discharged only 11 days after the shooting.
Dutch recognized the two other rally-goers — Comperatore and James Copenhaver — who were shot by 20-year-old attempted assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Crooks had been perched on top of a roof approximately 400 feet from the stage and controversially went unstopped by law enforcement and the Secret Service.

Comperatore, a former fire chief for the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, was in attendance with his wife and two daughters and had jumped on top of them to shield them from the hail of bullets.
Dutch also expressed praise for Copenhaver, 74, who survived two gunshot wounds at the rally, just like Dutch, “while exercising his fundamental right to freely express his support for a political candidate.”
Copenhaver, from Moon Township, Pa., was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen before he was released on July 28, but still has a “long road to recovery.

The shooting occurred at the Butler Farm Show where Trump was holding a campaign rally. APHe had attended the rally with his best friend and said he was saddened by the political division in the United States, in his first statements following his release.
Moments before the shooting, Copenhaver recorded a video of Trump at around 6:08 p.m. that captured a figure dashing across the AGR International roof.
The Dutch family also commended Trump’s show of strength after one of Crooks’ bullets struck the Republican presidential candidate in the ear.
“And for President Trump, who did not cower in face of danger and continues his fight to make America great again and restore America’s position as the most powerful and economically sound country in the world,” the statement added.
Both Copenhaver and Dutch have hired attorneys Nicholas Feldman and Joseph Feldman from the Law Offices of Max C. Feldman to “protect their best interests as they navigate the most challenging time of their lives,” according to Fox News.
