Senate investigators obtained information that Donald Trump Jr.’s phone calls to a blocked number ahead of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians offering dirt on Hillary Clinton were not to his father, CNN reported Thursday, citing a trio of sources.
Records provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee show the calls were between Trump Jr. and two of his business associates, the sources said.
The revelation appeared to dash Democrats’ long-held suspicions that the blocked number belonged to the elder Trump.
Investigators suspected that Trump could have had advance knowledge of the sitdown with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer and several others Russians.
First son-in-law Jared Kushner and then-campaign chair Paul Manafort joined Trump Jr. at the meeting.
CNN had not confirmed the identity of the business associates who spoke with Trump Jr. nor what they discussed on the calls.
