A tsunami warning was issued Monday afternoon after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska, according to the National Weather Service.

The 7.4 magnitude quake shook the earth about 55 miles southeast of Sand Point, an island off the southwestern mainland of the state, according to NOAA.

The quake hit just before 5 p.m. New York time, the agency reported. A tsunami warning was issued for the coast after the strong earthquake.
