A Turkish city has installed hundreds of new flower-shaped park seats, specifically for women uncomfortable warming a bench with strangers.

The 600 brightly colored seats, which look like tulips, rotate to avoid unwanted eye contact, and even have a space to hang a handbag.

Mayor Handan Toprak said the idea sprouted after she saw a conservatively dressed woman avoid sitting down next to an unfamiliar man, even though she was visibly exhausted.

“I know they are concerned that sitting with a stranger, with a man they do not know, will fuel rumors that the woman on the bench is having an affair,” Toprak told local newspaper the Daily Sabah.

“We had to give an option to women, a free choice,” she said.

Toprak says the city plans to plant another 600 seats — which have also been embraced by male park-goers.

Tulips are native to Turkey and popular in Istanbul, which holds an annual festival commemorating the bloom.
