A television reporter in South Africa was mugged just seconds before going live — and the frightening encounter was caught on camera.
South African Broadcasting Corporation contributing editor Vuyo Mvoko was outside a hospital in Johannesburg on Tuesday covering the arrival of Zambian President Edgar Lungu when a pair of armed thieves passing by stopped and robbed him and his crew, the TV station said.
In video posted to YouTube, the SABC journalist can be seen patiently waiting to go on the air before two men walk behind him and stop for a brief second. They both turn completely around and quickly walk off camera. Someone can then be heard screaming as the men urgently give orders to the crew.
The alleged robbers then set their sights on Mvoko and begin patting him down before ushering him out of view.
“Hey, we’re being mugged!” Mvoko frantically says into his microphone. “We’re being mugged!”
Mvoko would later say that one of the suspects was pointing a gun at him and his crew as he demanded all of their cash and cellphones, according to SABC.
No injuries were reported and there haven’t been any arrests yet, despite efforts to locate the men, authorities said.
“The member, a captain from Parkview police station, stopped to assist and ensure that the victims were safe,” Gauteng police Col. Noxolo Kweza told South Africa’s News24. “He drove around the area with one of the SABC staff members searching for the suspects, but to no avail.”
