One police officer was killed and another was “fighting for his life” in Chicago Saturday after the officers were allegedly shot at a hospital by a robbery suspect they were escorting.
One of the victims was shot in the head, according to WGN-TV.
The chaos unfolded on the city’s North Side around 10:45 a.m. after the cops brought the man to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital for treatment, the hospital said in a statement, according to the local ABC7 affiliate.
The shooting happened while the officers were transporting a prisoner either to or from the hospital.
The man had been checked for weapons and “was escorted by law enforcement at all times,” the hospital said in a statement, adding no employees or patients were hurt.
The suspect was in custody for attempted robbery, CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference, without detailing the alleged incident.
The fallen officer, who was not publicly identified, was a 38-year-old, 10 year veteran of the department, Snelling said.

A firearm was recovered during the investigation, according to authorities, who did not detail the sequence of events leading to the shooting and referred to the gun they found as a “third weapon.”
A surveillance camera image showed the purported suspect running completely naked, holding an apparent hospital gown, with three white electrode pads attached to his chest, WGN-TV reported.
Neither the victims nor the suspect have been named by authorities. APThe suspect was taken into custody at around noon after a manhunt.
“Today is a real difficult moment for our city. It’s a tragedy. Our officers stand in the way of harm every single day, risking their own lives, and along with them risking their lives, they have families that expect them to come home,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said Saturday, adding, “One of our officers will not be able to return.”
“Please pray for our police officers,” Chicago Alderman Jim Gardiner said in a post on social media.
Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital was put on lockdown after the incident, NBC News reported.
