The bodies of two Iowa State University students were pulled from a lake where their boat had capsized during crew club practice, school officials said.

Five students had been practicing for the Iowa State Crew Club on Sunday morning when the accident occurred at Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County.

Three of the students were rescued by three people who live near the lake.

A dive team recovered the body of another member of the team later in the day. The second body was discovered when the search resumed Monday morning.

Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons said sonar technology was used to find the exact location of the student’s body.

None of the students’ names have been released.

It’s unclear what caused the boat to capsize, but Timmons said conditions on the lake at the time were “pretty rough” with winds blowing at 20 to 25 miles per hour.

Roger Fritz, the former mayor of Roland, who lives on the west side of the lake, said the group “probably got swamped with some heavier waves.”

“Those crew boats are really shallow. They probably would’ve been fine on the north side of the lake where the full effect of the wind on the lake wasn’t getting to them,” Fritz told the Des Moines Register.

In a statement, university president Wendy Wintersteen said they were “heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident.”

“At this time, we are focused on providing support to club members, their families and friends,” Wintersteen said. “We ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts during this very difficult time.”
