Two US service members were killed Monday in Afghanistan in an inside attack, according to a report.
The service members, whose identities were not known on Monday, were killed when a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire on them in Kandahar, NBC News reported.
The Afghan gunman was shot and wounded and is being held by Afghan forces.
The Army’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, posted a tribute to the soldiers on social media.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the loss of two Paratroopers from the Brigade during combat operations,” the Facebook post read.
“I ask you to respect the official Department of Defense notification process, a process which may take a few days.”
The US troops were assigned to assist Afghan forces.
A similar attack took place in Oct. 2018 when a Taliban gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform opened fire on a military installation, killing three senior provincial officials and wounding at least three Americans.
More than 2,400 American military personnel have been killed since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001. More than 20,000 others have been wounded.
About 14,000 American troops are deployed to the country.
