The UN secretary-general warned Tuesday that the deadly coronavirus poses “enormous” risks for the world — and he most fears that it will spread to African nations that aren’t equipped to handle an outbreak.

“The risks are enormous and we need to be prepared worldwide for that,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in Pakistan during a conference.

Guterres added that the virus — which has infected more than 73,000 people — is “not out of control but it is a very dangerous situation.”

He said the greatest concern was the virus reaching areas with “less capacity in their health service,” especially some African countries.

The World Health Organization is working to prepare for such a development, he said.

His comments came after Egypt confirmed its first case of the virus, prompting fears about its spread to the continent.

China on Tuesday reported 1,868 deaths from the infection.
