University of North Carolina football players are lending a helping hand to those affected by Hurricane Florence — donating their allotted meal money to buy relief supplies, according to a report.

The supplies will go to residents of the eastern part of the state who were hardest hit by the storm, The News & Observer reported.

“It’s kind of a grassroots effort of people thinking, ‘What can I do to help?’” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham told the outlet. “I’m really proud of those guys for thinking that way.”

NCAA rules allow Division I athletes, whether on scholarship or not, to be given a meal after a game or up to $15 to buy one, according to the report.

All 85 players on the Tar Heels’ squad will donate their allotted $15 — $1,275 in total — after their Saturday game against Pittsburgh, Bobby Hundley, an athletics spokesman for the university, told the outlet.

Former linebacker Kevin Reddick, who played for the team from 2009 through 2012, contacted the Heels to ask if they could help donate and collect items for his hometown of New Bern, which was ravaged by the storm.

The team announced earlier this week it was setting up a campus donation site and planned to use an 18-wheel equipment truck to make deliveries to those in need.

“We’ve tried to participate in as many of those efforts as we could,” coach Larry Fedora told the outlet. “We will continue to do that going forward.”

Florence, which barreled into the Carolinas last week as a Category 1 storm and has since been downgraded to a tropical depression as it turned toward the northeast, has claimed at least 37 lives.

More flooding is expected over the weekend in the aftermath of the storm.
