An unlicensed massage therapist in Alabama has been charged with sexually abusing six female clients.
LeVan Uriah Johnson, the CEO of Oasis Day Spa and Wellness Center in Vestavia Hills, was busted by police on Jan. 22 after multiple women told investigators he touched them inappropriately during massages, AL.com reported.
Charging documents obtained by the outlet show the alleged assaults took place between November and January at the facility — which features hot stone, deep tissue, prenatal and other treatments using Native American healing methods for just $49 an hour, according to its website.
Johnson, 43, is a former US Army soldier and police chief in central Alabama, AL.com reported.
While the day spa had a business license, Johnson and his employees are not licensed massage therapists in Alabama. He managed to evade those requirements by claiming he had an exemption for practicing Native American healing, according to the report.
Two women, ages 26 and 39, told AL.com they were violated by Johnson during sessions, despite one telling employees she only wanted work done on her neck, shoulders and back.
After getting a rubdown by a female worker, Johnson walked into the room and fondled the 26-year-old health care worker’s breasts and touched her genitals, she recalled.
“Now I’m scared,” she told AL.com. “I froze. My body is paralyzed and I’m thinking about survival.”
The woman told Johnson she had to leave, but he insisted it was all part of “Native American healing,” she told the outlet.
She eventually left and later returned to the parlor’s parking lot and called police. Authorities then reportedly confirmed to her that neither Johnson nor his employees were licensed.
The young woman said she’s now on medication and intends to seek counseling for anxiety and suicidal thoughts after becoming a victim of sexual assault.
“It has still been a struggle,” she told AL.com. “I feel violated. I felt like this man was going to rape and kill me. It’s the worst feeling in the world.”
The 39-year-old victim, meanwhile, alleged Johnson put his head on her breasts during a session in January.
“There was no massaging going on,” she told AL.com. “It was just gross.”
An attorney for Johnson did not return a message seeking comment, AL.com reported.
He remained held Thursday at the Jefferson County Jail on $360,000 bond, online records show.
A phone call to the spa went unanswered early Thursday. A message seeking additional details from Vestavia Hills police was not immediately returned.
