American and Chinese negotiators are nearing an agreement on “phase one” of a trade deal aimed at easing tensions sparked by a trade war between the two nations.

“They made headway on specific issues and the two sides are close to finalizing some sections of the agreement. Discussions will go on continuously at the deputy level, and the principals will have another call in the near future,” a spokesman for the U.S. Trade Representative’s office told Reuters.

While details are still emerging, it appears that agricultural issues have thus far dominated discussions.

The US wants China to purchase more domestic goods like soybeans and lift restrictions on US poultry. China, in turn, wants the U.S. to purchase more of its food products and lift onerous tariffs that Trump has placed on their exports.

“They want to make a deal very badly,” Trump said Friday, “They’re going to be buying much more farm products than anybody thought possible.”
