The US coronavirus death toll surged in April, more than doubling the nation’s total tally in just the first week, grim new data reveal.

More than 12,000 Americans have died from the virus, which is up from the 3,500 tally recorded on March 31, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The peak of the pandemic in the country is likely still 10 days away — when 3,130 Americans are predicted to die in a single day, according to data from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics.

But Dr. Christopher Murray, the institute’s director, said the models change daily and the death toll could climber higher if preventive measures aren’t followed.

“If social distancing measures are relaxed or not implemented, the US will see greater death tolls,” Murray said.
