A 21-year-old US Marine died over the Memorial Day weekend, days after he was hurt in a tactical vehicle accident in Australia, officials announced.

Lance Cpl. Hans Sandoval Pereyra, an expeditionary airfield systems technician assigned to the Marines’ Aviation Combat Element, was taking part in a routine training exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area — a military facility near Darwin — on May 25 when the accident occurred, the Marine Corps said in a statement.

He initially was treated at the scene, and then taken by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

“We are saddened by the loss of Lance Corporal Sandoval-Pereyra,” Col. Russ Boyce, commanding officer for Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, said in the statement. “He was a beloved member of our community and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. We are extremely grateful to our Australian partners for their valiant efforts to save this young Marine’s life.”

Sandoval Pereyra, from Fairfax, Va., was previously assigned to Marine Wing Support Detachment 24, Marine Aircraft Group 24, based in Hawaii, officials said.

The young Marine was already highly decorated, having received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

One other Marine sustained minor injuries in the accident and has since been released from the hospital, the Marine Corps said.

About 2,500 Marines are stationed in Darwin as part of an annual rotation program.

Back in 2017, three Marines were killed in Queensland when a US military tilt-rotor aircraft crashed into the sea, also during a training exercise.
