Travelers may have to wear masks in US airports to limit the spread of the coronavirus, according to a report.

The Transportation Security Administration has been discussing whether to implement face-covering requirements as part of a slew of new initiatives to protect travelers and employees during the deadly pandemic, sources told Reuters.

It also may add barriers to protect security officers, require more extensive cleaning regimens and upgrade screening equipment to speed up security lines, the report said.

The discussions about face mask requirements come after nearly every major US airline announced passengers must wear them onboard flights.

The TSA has been looking into whether there are any legal hurdles to requiring passengers wear masks, as well as whether it would need to have the face coverings available for travelers, the report said.

The agency declined to comment on the report, calling it “speculative.”

As of Wednesday, more than 520 TSA workers had tested positive for the virus, including 200 from New York area airports, according to the agency’s stats.
