A false active shooter threat at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Thursday led to real-life gunfire when a sheltering midshipman was shot by an officer following a confrontation that stemmed from an apparent misunderstanding, according to reports and officials.
Gunshots were reportedly heard inside Bancroft Hall, a massive 1,600-person dormitory on the vaunted campus, shortly after a shelter-in-place warning went out across the campus, NBC Washington reported.
A Navy student who was sheltering under the lockdown order mistook a responding officer for the falsely reported active shooter — and sprang into action.
An active shooter threat was reported at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. APThe midshipman attacked the officer with a training weapon, causing the officer to respond by shooting the brave but mistaken student, NBC Washington reported.
That individual was taken by medevac helicopter off campus and to a local hospital in stable condition, according to a statement from the Navy.
Early reports stated that a disgruntled dismissed midshipman returned to campus with a weapon and was knocking on doors in the massive dormitory pretending to be a military police officer, according to Fox News. That report was found to be unsubstantiated.
According to reports, a dismissed midshipman returned to campus with and armed weapon and began firing inside Bancroft Hall. FOX News“At 5:07 P.M. EST, Naval Support Activity Annapolis security, in coordination with local law enforcement, responded to reports of suspicious activity on the Naval Academy grounds,” a Navy spokesperson said in a statement to The Post. “There is no active shooter threat, however one person was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing the building. One person has been medevaced with injuries. They are in stable condition.”
Democratic Governor Wes Moore issued a statement shortly after reports of a shooting that the scene was under control.
“In working with local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities, there is currently no credible threat to the Naval Academy,” Moore’s office told WBAL-TV.
The campus is still being swept, NBC reported.
