Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith of Ohio was a reservist on active duty at a Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga.

Smith, who grew up in Paulding, Ohio, was awarded a scholarship to play baseball at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio, after high school, said his step-grandmother Darlene Proxmire.

He decided to join the Navy after being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

The sailor got married a few months into his service and had three daughters.

“He loved his family,” Proxmire told The Washington Post. “His wife and his three little girls were his whole world.”

Smith had recently re-enlisted, she told the newspaper.

His grandmother Linda Wallace said she was upset about the lax security at the Marine-Navy center — where four Marines also were killed in the attack.

“I cannot believe our soldiers do not have guns there,” Wallace said. “A lot of people are learning our bases aren’t guarded.”
