The US will pause some deportations for 100 days, according to the Department of Homeland Security — a moratorium promised by President Biden on the campaign trial.

The move, which becomes effective Friday, is to “ensure we have a fair and effective immigration enforcement system focused on protecting national security, border security, and public safety,” DHS said in a Wednesday night statement.

The deportation pause will enable DHS to focus on U.S.-Mexico border security and the coronavirus pandemic, the statement said.

“Throughout this interim period DHS will continue to enforce our immigration laws,” DHS said.
