The US will send an advanced air defense system — Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) — and troops to Israel even after Iran warned Washington to keep its forces out of Israel, the Pentagon said.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment of the THAAD on Sunday, at the direction of President Joe Biden, said Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
The system — which is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles like the ones the Iran fired into Israel on Oct. 1 — is set to protect Israel following Iran’s massive barrages on the Jewish State.

The Pentagon’s announcement came just hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned the US not to deploy any soldiers to Israel.
“The US has been delivering record amount of arms to Israel,” Araghchi wrote on X.
“It is now also putting lives of its troops at risk by deploying them to operate US missile systems in Israel,” he added.

The US Army has seven THAAD batteries, according to an April report by the Congressional Research Service.
