The Utah snowboarder who died in an avalanche he inadvertently triggered was a “talented” chef, according to a report.
Matt Tauszik, 45 — who worked for a Marriott hotel restaurant — was crushed by three feet of snow Sunday in the backcountry near a Park City ski resort, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
He left the Canyons Village through an exit gate at the top of the lift to access the Conehead area of Dutch Draw, which is described as a “steep, rocky, avalanche-prone terrain,” according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
While snowboarding down the risky slope, Tauszik likely “stressed the snowpack” that caused the avalanche, news station KSL reported.
He was “caught, carried and killed” by the snow from the avalanche, the accident report said.
Matt TauszikFacebookSummit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said authorities dug him out of the snow and performed CPR to no avail.
Tauszik was from Salt Lake City and headed culinary operations for the University Park Marriott’s Thistle & Thyme restaurant, according to the newspaper.
“He was a talented and creative chef that lived and breathed food,” Jason Talcott, the hotel’s food and beverage director, told the outlet.
Talcott said he was an avid snowboarder and enjoyed mountain biking.
“He died pursuing one of his passions,” Talcott said. “In that, I find some solace.”
