CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan is condemning the reported sexual assault of a student.

Charlottesville police say they responded to a reported sexual assault early Saturday evening. According to police, the female victim was approached from behind by a suspect with a knife, pulled from the sidewalk and assaulted.

Sullivan spoke about the assault during remarks Sunday evening at the Opening Convocation and Honor Induction, a mandatory event for all first-year and transfer students.

According to The Daily Progress, Sullivan said of the assault: “We condemn it and we will not tolerate it.” She also said that there is “no place for it here” or for “violence of any kind.”

Classes at the school begin Tuesday.
