Two nephews of Venezuela’s first lady who were convicted of attempting to smuggle $20 million worth of cocaine into the United States were each sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday.

Efrain Campo Flores, 31, and his cousin Franqui Flores de Frietas, 33 — nephews of Venezuelan First Lady Cilia Flores — were convicted last year of conspiracy for trying to use their uncle President Nicolas Madura’s official airplane hangar to smuggle 800 kilos of cocaine into the US in November 2015.

Manhattan federal Judge Paul Crotty said they were motivated to smuggle the drugs because “they wanted to raise money for the political campaign in Venezuela.”

“Mr. Campo Flores and Mr. Flores [de Frietas] are perhaps not the most astute drug dealers that ever existed,” Crotty said adding, “They were in over their heads.”

Through a translator, Campo Flores said, “I know that I have made very serious mistakes . . . I am very remorseful and ashamed.”

Flores de Frietas said, “We’re all human and sometimes we sin. But that’s not an excuse for having gotten involved in what I consider my most shameful action of my life.”
