Cops in Georgia have come under fire after video surfaced on social media showing an officer and his partner pinning a 10-year-old boy to the ground — with both arms twisted behind his back.
Athens-Clarke County police officials are attempting to do damage control, releasing a lengthy statement on Monday explaining what allegedly happened, along with body cam footage from the Friday night incident.
“Stop resisting! Stop resisting!” one of the cops can be heard shouting on video, while the boy repeatedly apologizes.
“I’m sorry,” the child says, answering the officer’s demands with a “yes, sir.”
Cell phone video posted on Facebook by the boy’s cousin, Ariel Collins, shows family members pleading with the officers as they dig their knees into his back and attempt to restrain him.
“How you gonna do a child like that?!” a woman yells. “Get off his back!”
The boy had been upset about his father going to jail following a domestic violence call, according to police officials.
The officers involved had his dad in handcuffs and were attempting to take him into custody on charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment when the youngster became “extremely emotionally distraught.”
“As the suspect was being placed in the back of the patrol car, the [body cam] video clearly shows the child run past family members and again ran towards our officer and lunged at one of the officers,” explained ACCPD spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez. “Our officer caught the child in midair and the momentum of the child launching himself caused the both of them to land on the patrol car.”
According to Rodriguez, the boy “continued with the outburst” and was eventually “placed” on the ground by one of the officers.
The cop “continued to attempt to de-escalate the situation, assuring the child that he was not under arrest and that he would let him up if he would remain calm,” Rodriguez said.
“Our officer began to console the child and helped him to understand what was happening to his father,” he added. “The child asked to speak with his father and was allowed to do so by our officers.”
The cell phone video of the incident went viral over the weekend and eventually led police to launch an internal investigation. As a result, officials released the body cam footage on Monday, along with their explanation of what happened.
“The Athens-Clarke County attorney is reviewing the video footage due to a juvenile involvement, and the video will be released once his office has completed their review,” Rodriguez said.
Despite the investigation, officials did not place the officers involved on administrative leave. The men have yet to be identified.
