Firefighters in Arizona airlifted a woman in her 70s from a hiking trail after she injured herself on Tuesday morning — a difficult rescue made worse by turbulence that caused her stretcher to spin beneath the chopper, a report said.
The woman was trapped on the hiking trail in Piestewa Peak near Phoenix when she called for help, a local Fox affiliate reported.
“Firefighters made patient contact and decided that the best course of action was to fly the patient off the mountain,” Capt. Rob McDade of the Phoenix Fire Department told the news station.
During the airlift, a line that was supposed to prevent the stretcher from spinning in circles failed, and air turbulence from the helicopter’s rotor caused the woman to spin around, according to the report.
The woman suffered no injuries from the spinning, the report said.
