These cubs were looking for more than just a pick-a-nic basket.
A pack of four bears stole beer and candy from a Tennessee cabin, which they broke into and ransacked before the human occupants’ startled eyes.
The group laid siege to the mountain hideaway in Gatlinburg Friday, as two terrified women renting the home filmed the incident while seeking shelter on the second floor, CNN reports.
“It knocked over the trash, it knocked over a book, and it destroyed a couple of decks of cards and it scratched up a lot of stuff. There were scratches on walls and the floor,” said Michelle Eberhart, who was home with a friend at the time while their two husbands were off playing golf.
Eberhart told CNN that the bear barged through a locked door and forced its way inside while the other three bears milled about the porch.
The candy-crazed cub plundered five pounds of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, two pounds of Sour Patch Kids, a pound of M&M’s, two bags of potato chips, and a tub of peanut butter pretzels Eberhart said.
Police arrived and managed to chase the bears away — but not before the burly bandits also took two beers, two Diet Cokes and allergy medicine.
Matthew Cameron, a spokesman at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, told CNN that the bears were likely cubs that learned from their mother to seek out human food.
Bear break-ins are rare, but are more likely in early spring before more natural food sources become available, he added.
“Unfortunately, this lack of available, natural food drives some bears to seek out human foods and engage in nuisance behavior,” he said. “This aggressive behavior will continue until the summer berries begin to ripen, but that’s still over a month away.”
