WEIRD BUT TRUE
A six-story-tall wooden elephant named Lucy has just inherited $140,000 from a lifelong fan.
Marion Jean Ready was a toddler in 1914 when she first laid eyes on the huge statue – built as a tourist attraction in 1881 – which overlooks the beach in Margate, N.J.
Ready died in 2001 at the age of 90, and Lucy’s caretakers recently got the cash.
You can’t miss the upstate town of Rock City because when you get to the fork in the road – there’s a real fork.
The 31-foot-high silver, metal fork is the creation of local businessman Steve Schreiber, who kicked off the year 2000 by planting the sculpture at the intersection of two roads in the tiny Hudson Valley community, 90 miles north of New York City.
“I did it as a goof,” said Schreiber of the fork he made of forged scrap steel over nine months. “I didn’t think they would let me leave it there. Nobody has said anything.”
The hottest new diet book on the market may be – the Bible!
Several new programs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, have focused on what the Bible says Jesus and his disciples ate in a bid to help people slim down.
“God designed our body, and He gave us the signals to obey. If we overstuff ourselves, we are disobeying Him,” said Dorothy Miller, co-facilitator of the Weigh Down Workshop.
A little phone sex with your veggies?
That’s what the customers of Dominick’s Fresh Values, a grocery store in Warrenville, Ill., are offered when they call up a toll-free customer-service number.
Dominick’s officials say the number was canceled in 2001 and that for a year, a recording directed callers to its new number. The old number was later rented to a phone-sex business, but is still on the backs of customers’ old grocery-discount cards.
A World War II vet has only just discovered a bullet that had been lodged in his neck for more than 60 years.
Robert Kincaid, 84, of Gourock, Scotland, was speechless after doctors found the bullet during a routine checkup. He remembered being wounded by German troops, but thought the bullet had passed through him.
“I guess it will stay as a memento of my time in the forces,” he said.
