A West Virginia man found — and saved — a missing kayaker after search crews called it quits for the night, according to a report.
Corey Lilly joined the efforts to search for Sam Davis after he learned about the kayaker’s disappearance Sunday in the Kanawha Falls area, news station WOAY reported.
As an experienced kayaker himself, Lilly felt that his familiarity with the area might prove helpful in the search, the outlet reported.
So when search and rescue crews called it a night around 10 p.m., Lilly decided to continue and follow a hunch to check out a crevice behind the waterfall that might have been overlooked by the team.
“Knowing that with my extensive background of the area and paddling the falls hundreds of times, I knew that would be easily overlooked by search and rescue, and that’s somewhere that I wanted to check immediately,” Lilly told the outlet.
And his hunch was correct — Lilly and two other kayakers soon discovered Davis yelling for help while wedged on the ledge behind the falls.
“At that point we were like, ‘He’s alive. He’s stable,’ ” Lilly said. “And we need to make the best strategic action that is going to get this done swiftly and quickly.”
The group lowered a rope down to Davis, who clipped it to his harness and was pulled up to safety, the outlet reported.
Davis was brought to the hospital with hypothermia from spending eight hours behind the waterfall, but is expected to recover, Lilly said.
Lilly said that he hopes the successful rescue leads to authorities engaging the local kayaking community in future missions.
“Well, when you have the knowledge and you have the skillset to be able to do something and make a genuine impact on your community, it’s just human nature or maybe I should say the West Virginia nature to stand up and do something about it,” Lilly said.
