Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia said the reason his state has only one positive coronavirus case is due to a lack of testing.

The Democratic senator sounded the alarm Tuesday after the state’s governor, Jim Justice, announced the first patient’s diagnosis in an eight-minute televised address.

“We have no testing, we’re not prepared, people think we’re immune to this,” Manchin said on CNN.

The lawmaker said that until a few days ago, West Virginia had conducted just 40 tests.

By Tuesday, according to state health officials, that number was up to 137, with 122 tests coming back negative. Fourteen tests were still awaiting results as of Tuesday night.

Manchin said he’s been telling people that the state’s low case number doesn’t mean residents should put their guard down.

“I wanted to make sure that people understood they should not get a false sense of security,” he said on CNN.

The senator said he was especially concerned for what he called “the most vulnerable population at risk.”

“I have over 720,000 elderly. I’ve got over 220,000 that are critically ill under 60 years of age,” Manchin said.

“If you put all this together, of the 1,800,000 people [in West Virginia], I have over a million that could be absolutely, totally devastated by this virus if it hits.”
