The White House said Saturday it “strongly condemns” Pakistan for freeing an accused terrorist for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans.

Hafiz Saeed heads the Jamaat-ud-Dawa charity, which the US believes to be a front for an Islamist terror group.

The White House said Saeed’s release “sends a deeply troubling message about Pakistan’s commitment to combatting international terrorism.”

A Pakistani court released Saeed Wednesday, saying the government failed to present evidence of terrorist activity.
