The White House and US Capitol were put in lockdown Tuesday morning as fighter jets were scrambled when an unidentified aircraft violated the restricted airspace near the Mall in the nation’s capital, officials said.

“Senior officials across the interagency are monitoring the situation on a national event conference call. NORAD aircraft are on site and responding,” Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell, a Pentagon spokesman, told CNN.

The alert was first issued about 8:30 a.m. and was lifted at 9:12 a.m.

The aircraft “is not considered hostile at this time,” the North American Aerospace Defense Command said. The type of aircraft was not released.

A Capitol Police spokesperson told the Washington Post that “in an abundance of caution … access to Capitol Complex buildings was restricted for a short time.”
