The White House was reportedly aware for months that top staffer Rob Porter was accused of domestic abuse by multiple women — but they simply ignored the allegations.
Senior aides to President Trump even tried to defend Porter after his two ex-wives went public with the stories of abuse, CNN reported Wednesday.
Nevertheless, chief of staff John Kelly called Porter “a man of true integrity and honor and I can’t say enough good things about him.”
Colbie Holderness, Porter’s first wife, and Jennifer Willoughby, Porter’s second wife, both confirmed that they spoke with the FBI.
Porter never received a security clearance.
The top aide resigned from his post Wednesday, but denied the allegations against him.
“These outrageous allegations are simply false,” Porter said in a statement.
“I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign.”
CNN also reported that there was a third woman — who currently works for the federal government — who contacted both of Porter’s ex-wives in 2016 to complain about his abusive behavior.
