WASHINGTON — The White House announced Sunday the nation’s highest peak, Mount McKinley, will be officially renamed in honor of its original Athabascan name of Denali.
President Obama will travel to Anchorage Monday to meet with Native American leaders to unveil the name change as a step toward improving federal relations with native tribes, especially in managing fish and wildlife.
Mount McKinley was named in 1896 for former President William McKinley of Ohio. The 25th president had never visited Alaska but a gold prospector named the 20,000-foot peak to show support for his candidacy.
