There are currently 70 potential vaccines for the coronavirus in the works — with three already being tested on people, the World Health Organization says.

Two US pharmaceutical firms — Moderna in Massachusetts and Inovio of Pennsylvania — are involved in clinical trials, while a third company, CanSino Biologics of Hong Kong, is working with the Beijing Institute of Technology to conduct other human testing, WHO said.

Another 67 companies, including drug giant Pfizer Inc., also are racing to develop a vaccine, the agency said.

Researchers are pushing to bring a vaccine to market within the year — which would be a remarkable feat given that such drugs typically take more than a decade to make it to the public, Bloomberg reported.
