The wife of a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy was indicted for his murder after he died from injuries she claimed were from an attempted suicide, according to officials.
A grand jury charged 35-year-old Shantel Wagner with second-degree murder Thursday in the shooting death of Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Troy Smith, news station WDSU reported.
Prosecutors said Wagner — who also goes by Shantel Parria — called 911 on June 17 to report her 44-year-old spouse tried to take his own life in a bedroom at their Waggaman home.
Emergency responders determined Smith suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was brought to a local hospital, where he died a week later from his injuries, authorities said.
Detectives launched an investigation into his death and determined from forensic evidence that his wound wasn’t self-inflicted. The coroner’s report, however, still lists the cause of Smith’s death as “undetermined,” according to The Advocate.
Wagner’s lawyers argued investigators determined Smith’s death was a homicide from incorrect information about his injury.
“These findings are further proof in support of [Wagner’s] consistent story that Sgt. Smith was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he accidentally shot himself,” Wagner’s lawyers wrote in court documents.
Prosecutors challenged Wagner’s argument, claiming that she gave inconsistent statements to numerous people, including confessing to one person that she shot her husband, news station WDSU reported.
If convicted, Wagner faces life in prison.
