A mountain lion pounced on a Colorado deputy who responded to a report of the animal attacking a civilian, dramatic video shows.
Deputies from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, rangers from the local natural resources department, and game wardens from Colorado Parks and Wildlife responded to a reported mountain lion attack near an RV park west of Loveland just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said in a statement.
Deputies tried to keep the big cat contained, but the animal lunged on top of a female officer as she put her arms up for protection, video obtained by The Loveland Reporter-Herald shows.
Law enforcement officers chased the mountain lion away, but it took off running toward the trailer where eyewitness Gregory Scot Paul — who took the video — was hiding, the paper reported.
“Hey, there’s people in that trailer!” a man can be heard yelling.
Multiple gunshots followed, and authorities confirmed a game warden killed the animal near the home.
Both the injured deputy and civilian were taken to local hospitals with apparent but non-life-threatening injuries inflicted by the animal, authorities said.
“My heart goes out to her,” Paul told the Reporter-Herald of the deputy. “If she hadn’t put her arm up, it would probably have gotten to her neck.”
