Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader Janet Bewley was involved in a fatal car crash on Friday – a day after she reportedly underwent cataract surgery — that killed a young mother from Pennsylvania and her 5-year-old daughter, police said.
Ashland Police Chief Bill Hagstrom told the Ashland Daily Presson Monday that Bewley, 70, was not injured in the fatal accident in Madison.
As of early Tuesday, no charges have been filed as the State Patrol was reconstructing the crash.
“We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened,” Hagstrom told the newspaper. “Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”
Bewley was pulling out of a Lake Superior beach entrance when she ended up in the path of a car driven by 27-year-old Alyssa Ortman, according to the Ashland Police Department.
When Ortman’s car collided with Bewley’s, it spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle driven by Jodi Munson.

Our thoughts and prayers are focused on the individuals involved, their families and their loved ones,” Bewley’s office said in a statement Monday. “Senator Bewley, who was not seriously injured in the accident, wants to thank all the dedicated law enforcement and emergency medical personnel who helped in the aftermath of the accident.”
Khaleesi is seen celebrating her birthday. FacebookMadison Journal Sentinel reportedon Monday that when one of its interns called Bewley on Friday afternoon for a prearranged interview to discuss the upcoming fall elections, she told him she had cataract surgery the day before.
The paper reported that the state lawmaker then fell silent mid-sentence, and when the intern asked her if she was OK, Bewley was said to have replied: “Yeah, I’m OK. This is not a good accident.”
Meanwhile, loved ones have been posting condolence messages on social media mourning Ortman and her young daughter, who both lived in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and had traveled to the Midwest last week to visit relatives.
