A Colorado woman charged with killing her 11-year-old stepson has been found competent to stand trial in the boy’s grisly slaying.

Letecia Stauch, 37, is accused of killing Gannon Stauch, who was last seen leaving his Colorado Springs home in January 2020.

Stauch reported the boy missing, claiming he failed to return home from a friend’s house, but authorities said evidence showed he was attacked with a knife or another weapon while in bed, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

A judge in Stauch’s case found her competent during a hearing Tuesday and set a two-day preliminary hearing for early March when prosecutors will present evidence to support the charges against her, the newspaper reported.

A judge will also determine if Stauch, who remains held at the El Paso County jail, can post bail, according to the Gazette.

An earlier evaluation in September also found Stauch competent but her attorney sought a follow-up exam.

The second psychologist then reached the same conclusion, prompting Judge Gregory Werner to allow Stauch’s case to proceed after a six-month delay, the newspaper reported.

Attorneys for Stauch requested in November that her case be pushed back due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the jail that interfered with her psychiatric evaluation. The second exam was then scheduled for Dec. 22, KDVR reported.

Stauch, who appeared via video, did not speak during Tuesday’s hearing. Authorities suspect she killed Gannon at their home and then dumped his body in a rural area in Douglas County, the Gazette reported.

The ruling came about a week before the one-year anniversary of Gannon’s disappearance in a case that prosecutors are reportedly eager to begin.

“Speaking on behalf of the community and also family members, we want to get this case moving,” El Paso County District Attorney Michael Allen told KDVR..

Stauch, who has publicly denied killing her stepson, was ultimately arrested in March in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The boy’s remains were found weeks later in Santa Rosa County in Florida, but authorities haven’t said how they suspect they were taken there, the Gazette reported.

The district attorney, meanwhile, said prosecutors aren’t discussing the possibility of a plea deal with Stauch.

“We’re going to present the best case we possibly can in this case and let the community decide once we get to a jury,” Allen told KDVR.

Gannon’s father, Al Stauch, was out of town for training with the National Guard when his son vanished, he previously told KOAA.
