A woman was charged with swindling $63,000 of an insurance payout meant for a 75-year-old woman who lost her home last year in the California Camp Fire.

Brenda Rose Asbury, 29, of Oklahoma, turned herself into Butte County authorities on Tuesday for the alleged scheme. She was charged with elder abuse, embezzlement and grand theft.

She’s accused of ripping off the elderly woman whose home was destroyed in the Nov. 2018 fire that leveled the town of Paradise, destroying over 18,000 homes and killing 85 people.

California authorities issued a warrant for Asbury in September.

The alleged fraudster was being held in jail on $63,000 bail. She was expected to be arraigned Thursday.
