A woman was run over and killed by a parade float in New Orleans during the city’s Mardi Gras celebration, official said.

The unidentified woman was struck Wednesday night when she tripped while apparently trying to cross between a tandem float, which is made up of two sections connected in the middle, witnesses told local media outlets.

The tragic accident occurred during the Krewe of Nyx parade.

“On such a joyous night, this is obviously a tragic occurrence,” Nyx Captain Julie Lea said in a statement.

“On behalf of the entire Krewe of Nyx, along with the city of New Orleans, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual involved.”

The Mystic Krewe of Nyx, an all-female Carnival Krewe, was “established to unite women of diverse backgrounds for fun, friendship, and the merriment of the Mardi Gras season,” according to its website.

The accident involved Float 21, a double-decker decorated with hot air balloons and flowers, NOLA.com reported.
