A woman was killed in an alligator attack Friday at a South Carolina pond.
Cynthia Covert, 58, died after encountering the gator on Kiawah Island around 5 p.m., a beach and golf resort on the Atlantic Coast, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and local reports.
A deputy witnessed the attack and shot and killed the gator, NBC News reported.
About 5p today, deputies responded to pond near Salt Cedar Ln, Kiawah Island, for report of alligator encounter w/ a woman. The woman has died. A deputy fatally shot and retrieved the gator. @SCDNR & coroner also responded. Incident is still under investigation. #chsnews

An investigation is ongoing and the circumstances around the attack were not immediately clear.
Alligator attacks in South Carolina are rare, according to the Charleston Post and Courrier.
The first documented fatal alligator attack came in 2016, when a 90-year-old woman was killed. Another woman was killed by the mammoth reptile in 2018, the paper said.
