A woman in Texas killed a young mother and kidnapped her 6-week-old baby to hide her own miscarriage and pass the child off as her own, Houston cops said.
Erica Miranda-Alvarez, 28, was charged with capital murder in the fatal stabbing of Carolina Flores, 33, HPD Chief Art Acevedo said in a press conference Thursday.
Police say Miranda-Alvarez killed Flores and took her 6-week-old daughter, Shamali, Tuesday afternoon in a housing complex on Goodson Road, in northeast Houston.
She had previously been pregnant and was due in January, but suffered a miscarriage and was trying to hide it from her boyfriend by claiming the baby as her own, cops said.
Authorities believe Miranda-Alvarez was friends with the victim’s brother.
Little Shamali was found unharmed and is now in the care of Texas Child Protective Services, officials said.
