A woman sporting a mohawk tried to kidnap a young girl by luring her with cotton candy in an upscale section of Washington, DC, police said.
The suspect — a white female believed to be in her 30s — grabbed the girl at about 5 p.m. Tuesday and tried to lure her away from the 2800 block of Dumbarton Street in Washington’s tony Georgetown section, DC police announced Tuesday.
“Come to my house, I have cotton candy,” the suspect told the girl, according to a police report obtained by The Post.
The girl managed to break free from the woman’s grip and ran into her nearby home after being dropped off minutes earlier by a carpool driver, police said.
The female suspect then fled the scene on foot, walking eastbound toward Rose Park, police said.
The woman was last seen wearing a white coat and was described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall with blond hair that resembled a mohawk, police said.
Anyone with information about her whereabouts or information pertaining to the incident is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
Lulu Garcia-Navarro, host of National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition Sunday,” identified the girl Wednesday on Twitter as the 7-year-old daughter of a personal friend.
“The little girl showed immense bravery by shouting and running away and the suspect fled on foot after adults gave chase,” Garcia-Navarro tweeted. “Please circulate and make sure to always tell your kids to never go anywhere with strangers.”
