A resident of a Vermont retirement community poisoned her neighbors by putting the toxin ricin that she had made in her kitchen into their food over several weeks, the FBI said Saturday.

Betty Miller told an FBI agent that she wanted to “injure herself” and was testing the potentially deadly poison’s effectiveness on other residents at the Wake Robin senior living facility in Shelburne, according to a criminal complaint.

At least one victim became ill, but no one died from the ricin, officials said.

Miller, 70, said she made four to six tablespoons of ricin from 30 to 40 castor beans she found growing on Wake Robin property, and poisoned people on at least three occasions.

Cops found in Miller’s kitchen a bottle of powder labeled “ricin” in a basket and instructions for making ricin that apparently came from the Internet.
