A British woman who left her frail mom to sit in the same chair for almost a year — resulting in the elderly woman’s death — may avoid any jail time at all, according to local reports.
Linda Farr, 68, failed to get medical help for her mother, 86-year-old Doreen Shufflebotham, who suffered from a string of health issues, including a broken and infected femur, blood clots in her lungs and legs and bacterial meningitis, Telegraph UK reported.
Instead, she left her sick mom in a chair in their shared bungalow in Staffordshire for between eight and 12 months.
The older woman died on Sept. 6, 2016, and her daughter was arrested three days later.
She was charged with gross negligence manslaughter and pleaded guilty in March.
But on Monday, she was handed a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years — meaning she might not spend any time locked up.
Detective Inspector Dan Ison said it was “very upsetting” to hear about the “extent of negligence” in this case.
“Doreen’s injuries were incredibly severe and she must have experienced terrible pain in her last few months as she became increasingly ill,” he said. “I hope this raises awareness to others that appropriate medical advice should always be sought, especially if an elderly person is involved.”
Farr’s neighbors described her as a hermit.
“The people before moved out and a mother and daughter came but nobody sees them at all, they’ve been here for about 10 years,” retired potter Beryl Bennison, 82, told The Daily Mail.
“I used to see the daughter going uptown in the morning but she never spoke to anybody or mixed with anybody.”
