A Zohran Mamdani-loving 23-year-old socialist just became the youngest-ever regional vice president of Tuscany this week — and she has as much baggage as NYC’s mayor-elect.
Mia Bintou Diop, of Livorno, was named to the high post on Tuesday by center-left President of Tuscany Eugenio Giani, who was elected to his second term in October, just one year after she was elected to her hometown’s city council, La Stampa reported.
“Today my generation lives between impossible rents, precarious jobs, parents we don’t want to burden but can’t manage to break away from. I am part of it too. And precisely for this reason, I want to bring it into every choice and every decision,” the Young Democrat Party member said after the shock announcement, Ultima reported.

The truth is that our turn never comes unless we take it,” the senior politics major at University of Pisa said, according to Wanted in Rome.
After Mamdani’s victory on Nov. 4, the upstart left-wing pol likened her cause and political ascendency to the socialist mayor-elect.
“Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York is a powerful signal,” she wrote Nov. 5 on Instagram.
“This isn’t just a person shift at the summit: it’s a paradigm shift. It’s the claim of politics from the bottom,” Diop said of Mamdani, whose parents are millionaires.
“The left is no longer asking for permission, they are acting by opposing the dramatic policies of the right-wing via the voice of democracy: the vote,” Diop said.
Diop landed in hot water in 2023 just days after the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel when she posted on Instagram a flag with the words “Anti-Facism – Anti-Zionism” — and failed to condemn the barbarism of Hamas, Il Giornale reported.

She is also a member of the Livorno-Palestine Association which participated in September protests of Israeli shipping companies importing goods through Livorno ports, Progressive reported.
Diop, daughter of an estranged Senegalese father and an Italian mother, was elected to be a city counselor of Livorno in 2024, the Florence Daily News reported
The new position comes with an estimated salary of $100,642 per year, well above the average in Italy, which is roughly $38,422, according to Statista.
