A 6-year-old girl found barefoot on the tracks amid the twisted wreckage of a horrifying train collision that left dozens dead in southern Spain is the only member of her family to survive, officials said. 

The child escaped the ravaged train through a broken window, newspaper La Vanguardia reported, and a relative said she is in good health, and needed just three stitches on her head after her ordeal.

The mayor of her village called her survival a miracle.

“There are many people who are very sad for the victims of this terrible accident, but there were also many who survived, like the miracle of the girl who is safe,” Punta Umbria Mayor José Carlos Hernández told reporters Tuesday after calling for a minute of silence for the crash victims.

The girl was orphaned in the crash, losing both parents, a brother and one of her cousins. The village has declared three days of mourning for the victims including the girl’s family.

Her family name is Zamorano Álvarez, but her first name is not being revealed.

Mayor Hernández said that the girl is now with her grandparents in a hotel in Cordoba, the nearest city to the crash.

“She has a tremendous family who will do what it takes for her to have a happy life,” the mayor said.

The girl and her kin were sitting in the first few cars on the train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, which took the worst of the impact when a Malaga-bound train barreling toward them on a parallel track derailed.

So far authorities have confirmed 42 deaths, but have expressed fears the death toll could rise once the wreckage is fully searched and cleared.

More than 400 passengers were on board both trains at the time of impact, which left more than 120 people injured.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
