Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the people of Iran to rebel against the oppressive Islamic regime as the war continues to escalate

It was Netanyahu’s second call to rally Iranians this week.

“People of Iran, we are waging a historic war for liberty. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to remove the Ayatollah regime and gain your freedom,” Netanyahu said in a statement Tuesday.

“Together with the United States, we are hitting the tyrants of Tehran harder than ever,” he added.

The call came after a video message the prime minister put out on Sunday urging Iranians to topple the regime from the inside.

“To the Iranian people, I say I have been speaking to you and for you for decades. The moment of truth is approaching, for we seek not to divide Iran, we want to free Iran, to liberate it from the yoke of tyranny and live in peace with it,” he said.

Netanyahu’s statement echoed Trump’s statement after the war began, where he called on Iranians to take reins of the government once the war is over

“This will probably be your only chance for generations. America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force. Now is the time to seize control of your destiny and to unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is close within your reach,” the president said.

It remains to be seen whether Iranians will take up the leaders’ calls, or if they even heard them, given widespread internet outages across the country.

Israel has been pummeling Tehran with strikes since the conflict began more than a week ago.

Critics have warned that the war to topple Iran’s regime came too late after Tehran unleashed a violent crackdown on dissent in January.

After thousands took to the streets for weeks-long protests against the Iranian government, the regime’s security forces buried the opposition in a brutal wave of violence that has yet to be fully measured.

Estimates from humanitarian groups put the death toll between 7,000 to more than 30,000, with thousands more arrested in the bloodiest crackdown of the Islamic Republic’s history.

Since then, Tehran has kept a tight leash around its population, with a communications blackout leaving opposition groups with little means to coordinate another mass protest.
