One week after being sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney is expected to call a snap federal election Sunday, kicking off a campaign that’s sure to focus on the trade war with the US.
The Liberal Party leader and former central banker will announce Canadians are headed to the polls April 28, two sources told the Globe and Mail.
Carney won a March 8 Liberal Party vote to replace outgoing leader Justin Trudeau, instantly making him prime minister. APThe move was widely expected, as Trudeau’s replacement would seek a clear mandate from his countrymen on dealing with escalating tensions with the US.
The Conservative Party – the main opposition – was largely favored to win, until a wave of nationalism took hold of the country in response to Trump’s annexation threats, leading to a dramatic shift, with polls now showing a tight race.

Poilievre was leading the Liberals in the polls for the past two years – even by two digits – until recently.
